Tip #1- With Halloween just getting done, often times the question at our house is "What do I do with all this candy?!" All the favorites get eaten quick and the rest sits in the cupboard, goes stale, and then goes in the trash. Not anymore!! At our house the thing that never gets eaten is the straight chocolate (Hershey's Kisses, chocolate bars, or Nuggets) so this year I had a GREAT idea as I was walking down the baking isle of our local grocery store. "Chocolate chips are expensive!!"- was the sudden revelation! So I went home and put all this chocolate that would normally go to waste in a big plastic bag and took a hammer to it. I then put them in freezer quart sized bags and I now have enough chocolate chips for about 12 batches of cookies!!
Tip #2- A few nights ago I made YUMMY homemade chicken noodle soup. But I made waaaaaaay too much. My husband has this thing about eating "too much of the same thing" so I knew it wouldn't keep. The last thing I wanted to do was send it down the garbage disposal so I put the soup in muffin tins and froze it (yep, you read that right). Anyone who knows me knows that my freezer is my best friend an it's saves our family $100's every year! Freezing the soup in muffin tins allows for smaller quantities to be reheated at one time instead of thawing a huge bowl! Plus as a stay-at-home mom, I'm always looking for a quick lunch. Now all I have to do is grab a couple small blocks and warm em up in the microwave!
Tip #3- In our house we eat homemade bread (duh-it's cheaper). As many of you may know it goes stale ALOT quicker than store bought bread because it doesn't have the preservatives. Well don't throw it out!!! Make bread crumbs!! I use them in lots of things when I'm cooking- meatloaf, meat balls, even to thicken spaghetti sauce. Just cut the bread into small egg-sized chunks, put the bread on a cookie sheet, baked on 275 degrees F till the bread is crusty all the way through. Put a towel over the bread chunks and pulverise with a hammer! And presto, breadcrumbs! I sometimes like to sprinkle a little oregano and basil over mine and put back in the oven for another 10 or 15 mins. It's makes for GREAT meatballs!
